This photograph is a very fine example of early photography in India. It is a salt print and was taken in Northern India sometime between 1860 and 1868. The photographer is unknown but the quality of the composition in the photo suggests a high level of artistic expertise.

Edward Barnes would have been a Captain in the 37th Foot at the time of this photograph. Officers on hunts or military leaves in this period often wore native dress. It is interesting that he is wearing sandels. He would have needed tough feet to do this.

His rifle is a double barreled, percussion rifle, probably of a large calibre. The bear is also of a large calibre.

The Indian in the photograph is probably one of Edward Barnes servants. It is also possible that he is a bearer from the hunt.
