This carte de visite photograph was taken by Schwarzschild who was located
in Calcutta, India. The date of the photograph is probably about 1861-62.
(See the discussion below). The details of the backmark are shown to the
right.
The Lahore Punjab Battalion was raised in 1857 and became the 17
th Punjab Infantry in the same year. They then became the 29
th then the 25th Bengal Native Infantry in the same year
of 1861. Captain Hoggan is in the undress uniform of the 25th
Bengal Native Infantry. The patrol jacket and trousers of this uniform
are khaki in color. The collar facings are red. The date of this photograph
is suggested by the detail of the uniform sleeve shown to the left. The
Austrian Knot (khaki in color) of the sleeve is outline with a row of looped
cord lace (Russia Braid) which is the normal convention used to define
the rank of Captain. John Hoggan achieved the rank of Captain on the 27
th of June 1861. Also the black mourning band worn on the arm is probably
in remembrance of those who died in the Indian Mutiny of 1857-1859 and its
presence in the photograph would suggest a date close to this period of
time. These two details suggest a date of about 1861-62.
