The backmark shown to the right is for the carte de visite photograph
of William E. MacLeod in the uniform of a Staff Officer. The Staff Officers
cocked hat is on the table. He is wearing a singled breasted open collar
frock coat. The backmark is from the photographer Schwarzschild located
in Calcutta, India. The photograph was probably taken about 1868 after
his appointment as Assistant Adjutant General during the Abyssinian Expedition
of 1867-1868.
The carte de visite photograph of Charles Donald MacLeod as a Captain
does not have a backmark. The photograph probably dates between 1859 and
1861 as it appears that he is wearing the India General Service medal with
the clasp for the Persia Campaign of 1857. He held the rank of Captain
from 1848 to 1861. He is wearing a double breasted high collar frock coat
and tropical dress white trousers.
