This carte de visite photograph of Colonel Henry Phillipps, Poona Horse
was taken by Rustumjee Jamsetjee in Poona c1879-1881. The back mark of
the photo is shown to the left. Note that the identification on the photograph
misspelled the surname.
Colonel Phillipps is in a mess dress uniform. This maybe an example of
cold weather mess dress. This photograph was taken either just prior or just
after Colonel Phillipps' service in the 2nd Afghan War. This
service involved exposure to severe cold weather conditions. The outer
jacket is dark green with gold lace trim. The trousers are also dark green
with gold lace side trim. The mess vest is believed to be red (scarlet) with
gold lace trim. Details of the front of the mess dress are shown above to
the right.
The sleeve ornament is for a Lieutenant Colonel and is constructed of
gold embroidered lace with rows of Russian braid arranged in an eye pattern
on the top and bottom. The detail of the sleeve ornament is shown to the
left.
